Karst Mapping and Analysis

Beacon offers Karst potential mapping, hazard assessment and mapping for Indigenous, Forestry and Resource stakeholders. We have extensive expertise in locating Karst features through the use of remotely sensed data analysis in the resource and forest industries. Beacon has developed proprietary algorithms for the specific purpose of locating and mapping Karst potential features. We have successfully completed multiple projects internationally and throughout Canada.

Why are Karst Ecosystems Sensitive?

Karst landscapes attract various human activities such as timber and limestone extraction, recreation and tourism, and research, among others. However, these activities can exert additional pressure on fragile karst ecosystems. It is crucial to identify and consider these sensitive ecosystems in the planning and assessment of any project. Inappropriate land-use practices on the surface can lead to immediate and, in some cases, irreversible damage to subterranean karst environments. The environmental risk is often compounded by the lack of familiarity among land managers and decision-makers with the functioning of karst systems. Subsurface disturbances are not readily observable from the surface, further complicating the identification and mitigation of potential risks to these ecosystems. It is therefore essential to prioritize the understanding and protection of karst landscapes to ensure their long-term sustainability.

Karst Mapping

Karst potential mapping involves compiling factors associated with the formation of karst features into mapping data. This data is essential for karst protection and mitigation planning. As experts in identifying karst potential areas and features, Beacon offers clients actionable karst potential mapping services. Additionally, we can provide expert analysis by leaders in the field of karst analysis, ensuring comprehensive insights and informed decision-making in karst-related projects and initiatives.

Beacon Geospatial provides Karst potential mapping and hazard assessment services to Indigenous, Forestry, and Resource stakeholders. Our expertise lies in locating Karst features using remotely sensed data analysis in the resource and forest industries. We have developed proprietary algorithms for this specific purpose and have completed successful projects both internationally and throughout Canada.

Our Karst potential mapping services offer three levels of evaluation for Karst terrain, each with increasing requirements for data collection and evaluation based on the scope of the project:

Reconnaissance-level Karst potential mapping: provides a broad analysis over the area of interest and  can be compared to historic data.

• Planning-level Karst potential mapping: maps local Karst features and provides support for infrastructure or resource operations in forestry, oil and gas, mining, and other industries.

• Karst field assessment (KFA) and vulnerability assessment: our experts in the field of Karst assessment generate a comprehensive Karst assessment report outlining industry-standard recommendations and best practices.
